OFA Newfoundlands

The OFA Book is a priceless compendium, featuring every Newfoundland certified free of hip dysplasia by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. It includes all dogs from NF-1 (certified in 1967) to the current year's certifications. Biographical information is included for each dog: sex, color, AKC or CKC number, date of birth, sire, dam, breeder and owner, as well as the hip rating: excellent, good or fair. Up-do-date titles are also included. And updates (and all-new indexes) are available regularly, so the book never goes out of date. A separate, identically formatted and indexed section on OFA elbow certifications is included as well.

The complete OFA Book containing all the updates and entire biographies of all OFA clear hip and OFA clear dogs comes to you on-line, ready for loading onto your computer. Accessing its information is easy and incredibly fast. It is fully indexed by sire and dam, breeder and owner. This is crucial information for the careful breeder. If you are a breeder who is sincere about improving the health of the dogs you produce, this book is a must. It will be the most-consulted, most factual reference book you own. Prospective puppy purchasers who are serious about wishing to avoid genetic health problems will find this book of enormous value. Were you told that a particular sire or dam is OFA certified? Look the dog up and verify it. Did a breeder tell you his kennel has produced dozens of OFA dogs? Look it up. "Every puppy in the litter OFA’d," you're told. Doubt it? Look it up.

Starting in 2010 the OFA discontinued releasing the names of the owners of certified dogs. We have tried to maintain the OFA book as a source of information as complete as possible. In addition, we consider it appropriate to list the names of the owners of certified dogs because they have gone to the expense to obtain these health clearances. Every attempt has been made to find the names of the owners and publish them in the OFA Book. We ask breeders and owners of these dogs to help us by contacting us and supply correct and up-to-date information. If OFA continues this policy in the future, please help us by contacting us with the appropriate biographical information for these new certified Newfoundlands.

The data in the OFA book focuses on the biographical data for each OFA certified clear dog. The data for a clear hip dog and a clear elbow dog is processed in the same way. In the biographical sections, the dog's entry contains the OFA number and rating (the "G" after his number tells you this dog was rated "good"), his titles earned, his AKC or CKC registration number, when he was born, his color and sex, his parentage, and his owners' and breeders' names. Since its inception, we have attempted to include the titles earned by the certified dog. We have generally limited ourselves to American and Canadian Kennel Club and NCA titles. Obtaining this information has been a dauntless task. Presently we use the data published by the NCA (Newfoundland Club Of America) in a supplement to NewfTide. This list is approximately a year behind the OFA Book's publication. If you have an OFA certified dog who has earned titles at anytime, please check the dogs listing to see if we have the information up-to-date and correct. If you see the need for changes, additions, or corrections, please e-mail us the information, sweetbay@teleport.com , and we will make the appropriate changes. This is an example of the Sire index. The numbers after each stud dog’s name refer to the individual OFA certified dogs he has produced. Thus, Jason has produced 29 OFA dogs, Jordan has produced eight, and so on. By cross-referencing, you can tell which bitches the stud dog has been bred to, and quite a bit of information about their get.

The Dam index is identical to that for the Sire index. The Owner index is similar to the Breeder index but the numbers following a name are for the dogs they own or co-own. The data for Elbow clear dogs is processed in the same fashion.
